General Introduction

Founded in 1960, Beijing University Of Technology (BJUT) is a multidisciplinary municipal university with an engineering focus, offering programs in science, engineering, economics, management, humanities, law, and arts. In 1981, BJUT was approved as one of the first universities to provide Master’s Degree Programs by the Ministry of Education. In 1985, BJUT was approved to provide Doctoral Degree Programs. In 1996, admitted to the National “211 Project”, BJUT entered the ranks of 100 national key universities for the 21st century. In September 2017, BJUT was listed as one of China’s 95 universities to build world-class disciplines.

The main campus of BJUT is at 100 Pingleyuan, Chaoyang District, Beijing. It is bordered by East 4th Ring Road to the east, West Dawang Road to the west, Shuanglong Road to the south, and Pingleyuan Estate to the north. BJUT has another six campuses in Zhonglan, Guanzhuang, Huayuancun, Liulijing, East Huixin Street, and Tongzhou. All campuses cover an area of 935,400 square meters, gross floor area 990,600 square meters.

BJUT has 32 secondary teaching and research institutions, including Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Urban Construction (comprising four secondary teaching and research institutions, i.e. College of Architecture & Civil Engineering, College of Environmental & Energy Engineering, College of Architecture & Urban Planning, and College of Metropolitan Transportation), Faculty of Humanities and Law (comprising five secondary teaching and research institutions, i.e. College of Humanities & Social Science, College of Foreign Languages, Institute of Higher Education, Beijing Intellectual Property College and Beijing Intellectual Property Institute), Faculty of Materials and Manufacturing (comprising six secondary teaching and research institutions, i.e. College of Materials Science & Engineering, Institute of Nanostructured Materials and Properties, Institute of Circular Economy, College of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Electronics Technology, Institute of Laser Engineering, Beijing Guyue New Materials Research Institute), College of Applied Sciences, College of Economics & Management, College of Life Sciences & Bio-Engineering, College of Art & Design, College of Continuing Education, Division of Physical Education, College of Marxism, College of International Education, Beijing-Dublin International College, Fan Gongxiu Honors College, College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Beijing Smart City Institute, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Internet Technology, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Green Development Institute, Beijing Institute for Scientific and Engineering Computing, and Beijing Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. BJUT offers programs in eight disciplines, i.e. engineering, sciences, economics, management, humanities, law, education, and arts. BJUT boasts three State Key Disciplines, three Municipal Key Interdisciplinary Programs, and 39 Municipal Key Disciplines. BJUT provides 20 first-class doctoral programs, 33 first-class masters’ programs, and 18 postdoc research centers. In addition, BJUT offers professional master’s programs in 11 areas, i.e. engineering, business administration, architecture, urban planning, applied statistics, social work, education, art, public administration, finance, and law. The Master of Engineering program provides 17 sub-disciplines. BJUT provides 64 undergraduate majors, two of which are municipal university first-class majors. BJUT is ranked No.107 according to the QS Asian University Rankings (No.26 in China). Eight disciplines rank among top 400 in QS World University Rankings by Subject. Three disciplines, namely materials science, engineering, and chemistry, rank top 1% in ESI Global List.

BJUT boasts two national engineering laboratories, three “111 Project” talent introduction bases, one national industry-academia-research center, one international cooperation center, one national province-ministry co-construction key laboratory breeding base, six key laboratories/engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, one strategic research breeding base of the Ministry of Education, 26 key laboratories/engineering technology research centers of Beijing Municipality, nine international science and technology cooperation bases of Beijing Municipality, three social sciences research bases of Beijing Municipality, four industrial key laboratories, four collaborative innovation centers of Beijing Municipality, and four other research bases. In 2015, “Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Internet Technology” was listed in “Beijing Higher Education Institution Advanced Innovation Center Construction Plan”. In 2017, “Modern Urban Construction and Environmental Engineering Disciplines” (core disciplines including civil engineering, environmental engineering, and traffic engineering) were selected by the Ministry of Education to build world-class disciplines.

By May 2018, BJUT has over 3,100 teaching and administrative staff (1,800 full-time teaching staff), including three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, seven full-time and concurrent academicians, three winners of the “National Outstanding Teacher Award”, ten Changjiang Distinguished Professors awarded by the Ministry of Education, 12 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, three scholars listed in the National High-level Personnel Special Support Program (“Ten Thousand Talents Plan”), 12 scholars listed in the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Program, one Young Changjiang Scholar awarded by the Ministry of Education, 13 winners of the Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. BJUT has more than 24,500 students, including over 7,500 postgraduate students, over 14,000 undergraduate students, over 2,000 adult education junior college students, and over 1,000 international students.

Since its establishment 58 years ago, BJUT has provided more than 150,000 graduates (including over 26,000 master and doctoral graduates) for various fields of Beijing’s economic and social development. They are playing key roles on all fronts. BJUT has become an important base for high-quality innovative talents in Beijing, and an important force in scientific innovation and research & development, which is indispensable to regional economic and social development. BJUT has become an exemplary window for the achievements of municipal universities in Beijing.

New ideas guide new journey; new era calls for new actions. Under the leadership of CPC Beijing Committee and People’s Government of Beijing, BJUT will deeply study and implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC, and diligently implement the requirements of the Outline of the National Medium- and Long-Term Program for Education Reform and Development and Outline of the Beijing Municipal Medium- and Long-Term Program for Education Reform and Development. BJUT will uphold the principle of “Rooted in Beijing, Serving Beijing, Inspiring China and Embracing the World”, unswervingly strengthen the university through human resource development, characteristic development, and open policies, and develop a scientific blueprint for itself.
